The smallest département in France became a part of the region in 1921 and today is probably best known as the manufacturer of the country’s high speed train, the TGV.

On the Swiss-German border it shares many qualities with neighbouring Alsace. Unlike its neighbour it was successful in fending off the Prussian forces in 1870-71. A sandstone lion in Belfort sculpted by Auguste Bartholdi commemorates the resistance.
