This is skiing country with a dusting of resorts throughout the département. The Clarée valley has fabulous views but is only really for serious hikers. The small village churches in the mountains are worth investigating as they often have small frescoes. But to really appreciate the area you need to be keen on walking.
Like many ski resorts, Devoluy, has branched out into other activities in the summer and offers quite a variety of well organised outdoor pursuits including canyoning, riding, sailing and mountain biking.

Outdoor types are spoilt for choice with the Queyras regional park and the Parc National des Ecrins.
Fortified Briançon, one of Europe’s highest towns, perches on the rocks and makes a good base for exploring the area. Only 10 km from the Italian border, it is busy in summer and is reasonably lively. The newer town Ville Basse leads up to the old town, mainly 18th century, with a generous smattering of fountains and pedestrianised streets fairly well stocked with shops. The Italian influence comes strongly into play in the cafés where pizzas and cakes are served up with mouth watering panache.
Serre Chevalier, around 6 km away, has over 60 pistes for skiing and is a good choice for families as it caters for all pockets.
